South Dakota Game, Fish & Parks

Sentry served as General Contractor for the new park shop and cold storage building at Roy Lake State Park near Lake City, South Dakota. Delivered for the South Dakota Department of Game, Fish & Parks through the Office of the State Engineer, the project replaced an aging shop with a modern facility built to support year-round park maintenance and operations.
The new building combines a 2,000-square-foot heated maintenance shop, including office and restroom space, with a 2,000-square-foot cold storage addition for park vehicles, boats, and equipment. Multiple overhead doors, a large concrete apron, and a mechanical mezzanine give park staff a functional, durable space to maintain equipment and keep the park running in every season.
Working from plans developed by DesignArc Group, Sentry self-performed the majority of the work, coordinating earthwork, concrete, building construction, and mechanical and electrical systems to keep the project moving through a South Dakota winter and on to completion in 2026.
As a state-funded project, Roy Lake required close coordination with the Office of the State Engineer, the design team, and park staff throughout construction. Sentry managed submittals, inspections, and schedule milestones to meet the State’s quality and documentation standards.
Breaking ground in the fall, the team prioritized foundations, underground plumbing, and interior slabs before winter set in. With the building enclosed, interior work continued through the colder months, setting up exterior site work and finishes for spring.
Sentry’s project management team oversaw all phases of the project, including scheduling, submittals, subcontractor coordination, and communication with the Office of the State Engineer, the design team, and park staff.
Sentry removed a portion of an existing structure on site, then completed earthwork and site preparation, building foundations and interior slabs, and a large exterior concrete apron serving the overhead doors. Finished grading and drainage around the building complete the site.
Sentry’s General Contracting Division self-performed the framing and building envelope, including metal roofing and siding, overhead doors, and protective bollards. Inside, the heated shop is finished with durable steel liner panels and a mezzanine, and the office and break room include cabinetry, an acoustical ceiling, and a resinous floor finish. The cold storage addition provides secure space for park vehicles and equipment.
Sentry’s Electrical Division installed the electrical service, power distribution, LED lighting, overhead door operators, and data infrastructure throughout the shop, office, and cold storage spaces.
Sentry’s Mechanical Division provided plumbing and mechanical systems for the facility, including underground plumbing, a shop trench drain, break room plumbing, water heating, overhead radiant heat in the shop, and a ductless system serving the office.
Public facilities need to be durable, practical, and built to last for the people who rely on them every day. Through project management, self-performed construction, and in-house electrical and mechanical trades, Sentry delivered a facility that helps Roy Lake State Park staff care for the park and serve its visitors for years to come.
